Choosing a software development company is one of the more consequential decisions a growing business makes. The wrong partner costs you far more than the invoice: missed launch dates, code nobody else can maintain, and a rebuild eighteen months later.
Verify the company is real
In India, a legitimate software company is registered with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs and holds a CIN. Ask for it, then look it up on the MCA portal. Ask for the GSTIN too. This takes five minutes and removes a large share of risk before you have spent anything.
Ask to see work you can verify
Screenshots prove very little. Ask for live URLs, and where the work is under NDA, ask for a reference call instead. A company confident in its delivery will arrange one.
Understand who actually writes your code
Find out whether the people in the pitch meeting are the people on the project. Ask about team size, seniority, and what happens if your lead developer leaves mid-build.
Agree on ownership before you start
Your contract should state plainly that you own the source code, the repository, the domain and the hosting accounts. If a company resists this, that answer is the whole answer.
Look at how they handle the boring parts
Documentation, handover, testing and post-launch support are where projects quietly fail. Ask what the support window covers, what a bug costs after launch, and what the handover package contains.
Warning signs
- A fixed quote given before anyone has asked what you need
- No written scope, or a scope that fits on one page
- Reluctance to name the technology stack
- Pressure to pay a large share up front
- No named point of contact
A good partner will slow you down at the start, asking questions you had not considered. That is the signal you want.
